Our Why

ADDRESSING THE CRISIS

The United Scarborough Initiative
was born out of a need to bridge gaps.

Today’s youth face unprecedented mental health and developmental challenges, creating a crisis that affects not only the individuals themselves but also the broader health and safety of future generations. At the United Scarborough Initiative, we recognize these pressing issues and are committed to addressing them head-on.

The Mental Health Crisis

Youth is a critical period for mental health, with research showing that up to 70% of mental health issues begin during childhood or adolescence.

Loss of Purpose and Rising Suicide Rates

The statistics are sobering: in 2016, suicide accounted for 19% of deaths among youth aged 10-14, 29% among youth aged 15-19, and 23% among young adults aged 20-24.

Youth Crime and Community Safety

Youth involvement in crime remains a significant concern in Toronto, with over 7,400 incidents reported in 2016 alone.

A Shortage of Community Programs

Within a 5x5km radius of the Scarborough Alliance Centre, there are more than 20 schools but only five community centers, only one of which offers free drop-in programs for youth.

STEPPING UP TO THE CAUSE

Bridging the gaps, building brighter futures.

Today’s youth face unprecedented mental health and developmental challenges, creating a crisis that affects not only the individuals themselves but also the broader health and safety of future generations. At the United Scarborough Initiative, we recognize these pressing issues and are committed to addressing them head-on.
